Animal Abuse

The excitement was rising in me. I was feeling the joy and happiness in me. As the dog looked at me pitifully, I bashed it up even more.

It all started when I was walking along the streets of Marine Parade with my good friend Marc. The day was hot and I was covered in sweat. As I wiped my sweat away with the back of my palm, I saw a white maltese following us.

‘’Look Marc! There is a dog following us!’’ I exclaimed.

‘’Never mind, it will probably go away after a while. Just leave it alone.’’ said Marc.

So I forgot all about it and continued walking. It did not go away, so I nudged it. Now I was starting to get irritated. I could see Marc’s anger rising too. Suddenly Marc pushed it so hard that it toppled over. Seeing this I decided to join Marc too. After all, I could take out my anger on the dog and seek revenge. I grabbed two long twigs from a nearby tree and passed one of them to Marc. We brought the dog to the void deck and bashed it up. We rained blows on that bad dog with our twigs. Serves it right! Then we kicked it and threw it against the wall.

Suddenly, a little girl came up to me and asked me to stop.

‘’ Who are you to tell me what to do?’’ I cried out as I pushed her aside. Then Marc and I tried to run away before anyone else saw us.

‘’Stop right there!’’ said a security guard. Now I knew I was going to get my just desserts. I was in the wrong and I was about to be punished. He then reprimanded and explained to us that animal abuse was a serious crime.

Never again would I be so cruel as to beat up defenceless animals as I lay on the stone-cold floor in the Boy’s Home.

Discuss reasons why people would want to mark celebrations like Valentine’s Day or National Day on Singapore Flyer
Singapore Flyer, standing at stunning 165m, is the height of a 42-storey building which is 30m taller than the famed London Eye. It costs $240million to build. I guarantee that if people hear of these reasons, they will surely want to take a flight too.
1) It is the only place in Singapore to enjoy a magnificent landscape. As the wheel turns, people can see iconic and breathtaking landmarks and views: Marina Bay, Singapore River, Raffles Place, Merlion Park, Empress Place and the Podong.
2) Besides that, people can get a feast on famous local dishes such as, Seafood Paradise @ Flyer serves famous local food like chili crab, butter crab, cereal prawns and drunken prawns. Before or after the ride, to prevent the hunger of the visitors, there is a great variety of international food from Indian fusion to Japanese delicacies and Italian epicurean. The food stated above is most suitable for foreigners or tourists who are not used to local food.
3) The view outside the capsules offers a picturesque landscape for photo taking. There is a lush, tropical rainforest in the centre and water displays, streams, rocky outcrops and etc.

Composition Sample (Good Endings)

My friends and I were swimming at the very pool when it happened, and I saw it all. It had been a warm, sunny day. My friends, Nadine and Sabrina, were there with me. We splashed and played only for a few minutes before the incident occurred.

“Splash!” My friends and I heard it and we turned around to face where the sound came from. There, right before our eyes, was a pool full of blood. The lifeguard, who had been sleeping, immediately woke up and stared at the pool.

“What happened?!” he asked.
“Crocodile!” someone shouted.
“What! Someone call the police!” another person shouted.
“Help!” Someone exclaimed accompanied by the sound of thrashing.

Sabrina scanned the pool for the person in need. She jumped into the pool and swam as fast as possible to the boy. He struggled to keep his head above the water as the crocodile snapped at his feet. Sabrina grabbed the boy and swam towards Nadine, who was calling the police while I called the zoo. The crocodile cut through the water at full speed toward its prey, opening its jaws wide for the killing blow. It missed and people cheered. But the cheering stopped when they saw Sabrina starting to slow down and blood rushing out of her leg.

“Come on, Sabrina! You can do it! Just a little more! Don’t give up, not now!” Nadine and I encouraged.

Sabrina tried to get away, but the deadly predator pursued her swiftly. The sounds of an ambulance could be heard outside.

“About time! Quick, Nadine! Get outside and tell them to hurry up!” I shouted to Nadine.

Nadine ran out, and briefly explained what had happened. The police, who had arrived earlier without me noticing, were streaming in behind the zookeepers. One of them shot the crocodile with a tranquilizer. It slowly stopped moving and the zookeepers put it in a cage to be sent back to the zoo. The police and paramedics carried Sabrina and the man she had tried to save to an ambulance each, while more police herded the people out and questioned some witnesses. Two policemen walked up to Nadine and me and asked us who our parents were. My parents arrived shortly after, running towards me and asking me if I was alright. Soon, Nadine’s and Sabrina’s parents arrived at the scene. Nadine told them about Sabrina and they were devastated. All of us visited Sabrina the day after, but she had died in her mother’s arms earlier.

“She was a hero,” Nadine said.
“She died an honourable death,” my father lamented.

The day I lost a friend was the day she had gained everyone’s fullest respect.

Incident At The Swimming Pool
The air was muggy as the occasional breeze had died down, leaving the trees and grass to wither. The clear water glistened under the scorching heat. I took a deep breath and the fresh air filled my lungs. I felt rejuvenated. Not a second to waste, I dived skillfully into the pool, splashing water all over. As I came up to the surface of water, my friends applauded and praised me. Jasmine, Alice and I decided to swim after our final-year-examination. However, despite the smile on her face, as she turned back, she muttered some bad words under her breath. Realising that she was cursing me, I felt the tips of my ears tinge with anger. Jasmine, the rich girl, always wear most expensive Adidas swimming costume but never goes into the water, only to hang around the pool.
“Jasmine! How dare you curse me! You can’t even swim, huh?” I hollered at her.
Immediately, her face turned as red as beetroot. She blushed so furiously that even the tips of her ears turned red.
She swallowed a gulp and muttered, “Well, I… can! I can swim! I can beat you! Do you want to see? I will… dive at the deepest point of the pool!”
Dumbfounded, I stood rooted to the ground. Alice and I were astounded. As a diver of school team, even I had never dived at the deepest point of the pool! I could see Jasmine’s legs turn jelly-like and she was terribly apprehensive as she took each step. We whispered in hushed tones that Jasmine was never going to make it. Jasmine finally jumped, spinned and dived into the water. As the last drop of water landed in front of us, we expected to see Jasmine gasping for air and coming up to the surface. However, nothing happened.
For about one minute, Jasmine did not appear. A thought dawned on me that she might be struggling in water. In a microsecond, I dashed towards the point where Jasmine jumped and dived. As I swam and looked for Jasmine, I stammered nervously to myself, “Please, please, where are you?” Just then, I caught a glimpse of someone thrashing about and gesticulating wildly towards the surface. I craned my neck and strained my eyes. It was Jasmine! Without a second thought, I swam skillfully towards her. I grabbed her arm and gestured that I was going to rescue her. I finally dragged her out and tried my best to resuscitate her.
“Stupid! Why are you so reckless?” I shouted, as my eyes reddened and turned moist.
From that incident, I realized that Jasmine could not swim as she had a heart problem. Another lesson I learnt was… skills in life-saving come in handy!

THE JACUZZI SITUATION

“Mark! We are getting late, after dropping you at the tuition centre, I have to go swimming!” I yelled and waited for my brother to come downstairs.

“Whatever Megan! I want to finish my video game. Just wait for five minutes!” Why did mother put the machine in his room?

In Las Vegas, everybody is obsessed with video games and do not what goes on around them! If you are going somewhere, you can forget what you want to buy and sometimes even why you are there……

“Let’s go?” Mark said after TEN minutes.

At the swimming pool, I met Jan and Gwen who were twin sisters but totally different. Splashing, racing and volleyball, everyone was having fun when a loud splash came from the Jacuzzi pool. People started screaming and thinking why was a heavy green, metal ball doing in a Jacuzzi?

Ten minutes later, smoke and started splashing out of the water. It was surely an electronic device! Luckily a quick-thinking man called the security guards and everyone was asked to evacuate that area. After the device was inspected, F.B.I members confirmed it was dangerous!

The F.B.I members brought the device carefully a gigantic plain and buried it slowly. Half an hour later, “Boosh!” it exploded but nobody was hurt as the land was deserted.

Everyone was sent back home and I feeling excited in a weird way as this experience was actually scary.

The next day, on news channel ‘LV 24/7’, there was a report about this incident. I was elated as nobody was hurt but this would be an unforgettable experience! But as people say, all’s well, ends well.

Intelligent MCQ Guessing (Courtesy of the University of Delaware)

* Alternatives with absolute or universal qualifiers are usually wrong (“all”, “every”, “never”, “in no case”, “in every case”, etc.)

* Alternatives that seem impossible or that seem completely unrelated to the question are usually wrong (watch out for alternatives that are true, but have nothing to do with the question).

* If two or more alternatives say the same thing, each is probably wrong (you can have two that are wrong, but not two that are right on m/c tests).

* The answer to one question is sometimes given away in another question (tests contain a lot of information - use it).

* When 3 or more alternatives deal in different ways with one concept, one of them is usually right. The instructor usually doesn't waste 3 alternatives on single incorrect concept. In this case, he or she most likely wants to have you discriminate knowledge.

* If two answers contain a similar sounding word, such as "subordination" and "subrogation," choose one of these.

* If two answers are almost identical except for a few words, choose one of these.

* If two answers seem extreme, they should be eliminated, and a guess made as to the remaining answers. As an example, if the answer is to be a number, and 3, 57, 89, 1103 are the choices given, you should eliminate the 3 and 1103, and take a guess at one of the remaining choices.

* If you are unable to eliminate any answer on a 4 answer question, choose the third. Experience has shown that it has a better than 25% chance of being the correct answer.

* Don't try to apply definitions from outside the course. Answer the questions found on your lecture and class reading; not based on educational knowledge that you have.

* When all else fails:
1. choose the alternative that makes the best sentence, when added to the open-ended question.
2. look for subject-verb agreement.
3. know the instructor's quirks of language.
4. choose the longer answer. The instructor may have used more words to make the answer precise; thus the most correct.

* None of these rules works all the time, so use them only if you must.

Composition 4

The first rays of sunlight lit up my room. The dawn chorus of melodic birdsong drifted in. I jumped out of bed and went to the bathroom with a spring in my step.
“Let’s have a jog in the park!” my father suggested.
We had our breakfast and went to the park. The cold air in the park smelt of dew and grass. The earth was bathed in a warm rosy glow. After finishing our jog in the park, we walked back home, feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. As we were approaching the lift lobby, we saw a man push our elderly neighbour, Mr Lee, into the lift. My father and I exchanged worried glances. Before we could find out what was happening, the lift door had closed.
The lift stopped at the second floor. When the lift came back down to the first floor, no one was inside, so we were sure that the man had taken Mr Lee to the second level. We quickly proceeded to the second floor. As I was a fast runner, I sprinted down the corridor. As I turned the corner, there he was — the sinister stranger who was with Mr Lee. The hoodlum brandished his knife at Mr Lee, who was paralysed by fear, and demanded his wallet menacingly. He pinned Mr Lee to the wall. Mr Lee groaned in pain.
My hair stood up and my heart was in my mouth. Suddenly, a burst of courage ran through me. I darted towards the robber. But,as quick as lightning, he pinned me to the wall too, his face twisted into a hideous smile. He let out a wild, demonic laugh. He glared menacingly at me with a steely glint in his eyes. He thrust his repulsive face with its long, hooked nose in front of me. He was so close that I could see a pulse beating behind a livid, red scar on his right temple. His long, dishevelled hair hung across his face and he reeked of alcohol. His loose, ill-fitting clothes looked as though they had been slept in. My courage melted away as a tingling sensation ran down my spine.
The daring robbery in broad daylight attracted the attention of passers-by. A huge crowd was gathering below us. Suddenly, the sirens of the police car screamed its way through One of the passers-by had called for the police. Policemen went up to the second floor and gathered around us.
“Do not come closer or they will be dead!” the hoodlum shouted.
I felt the cold knife against my neck. The policemen tried to persuade the hoodlum to put down the knife, but he refused.
“Put down the knife or I will shoot!” one of the policemen ordered.
Upon hearing this, the hoodlum finally gave in and surrendered. Mr Lee and I escaped unscathed. The incident was reported in newspapers the next day. I will never forget this incident.

Done by: Carrie Xia

The day blossomed like a bright and lovely flower. The air was fresh and crisp. Warm rays of the sun filtered through the canopy of leaves, embracing the glistening dew drops and bidding them farewell. My father and I were ambling slowly back home from the market. Although it had only been a short trip, my father was dressed to the nines. I helped my father carry a few plastic bags filled with fruits, vegetables, sweet drinks and many more.
As we were approaching the lift lobby, a masked man, with great agility, pushed our elderly neighbour, Mr Goh, into the lift. Just before the lift door closed, the man flung a gunny sack over Mr Goh’s head. Being a healthy man, Mr Goh put up a tough struggle, but he was no match for the pair of burly arms that encased him. Fear gripped the pits of my stomach. “What did that man want? What did it have got to do with Mr Goh?” fearful thoughts ran through my mind. Just then, it dawned upon me that there was no reason. That man just wanted to black mail Mr Goh’s family members. Needless to say, he was a kidnapper!
In a split second, I whipped out my cell phone and called the police. My father looked at me and gave me a thumbs-up. Not long after, the wail of sirens announced the arrival of the police. In less than fifteen minutes, the police found the kidnapper’s whereabouts. They arrested the kidnapper and freed Mr Goh unharmed.
When we saw Mr Goh, he was ashen-faced and befuddled. After he snapped back to reality, he realized that justice had finally been served to the kidnapper. He thanked us profusely. The most important thing I had learnt was that when you do a good deed, not only would other people feel happy, you will also be happy.

Composition 2 - A Raging Inferno

I watched in horror as the huge orange flames engulfed the house. It was 9 p.m. and I was watching news and the reporter was reporting at the scene about a bungalow that had gone up in flames. Someone had accidentally ignited a pile of newspapers and the fire had spread wildly. As I watched the firefighter rushing to douse the fire, I could not help but recall the fire at my HDB block two years ago.

It was 11 a.m. and my mother had gone out to buy food for lunch. I was all by myself at home doing homework, when a sudden loud explosion rocked the entire place. Although I was shocked, I was overcome by curiosity and looked out of the window. I saw fire coming out of the fourth level as I was staying on the sixth level. I was stunned for a moment but after awhile I called the fire brigade.

When I looked again, there was complete pandemonium and people were running in many directions. There were clouds of smoke and it invaded my nostrils. Petite little children were screaming and loud terrified cries filled the air. While I was rushing down, the smoke got thicker and it filled the air, shrouding my vision. It stung my eyes and made me cough. I ran blindly forward for fresh air as the building was engulfed in flames.

Soon, the fire brigade arrived and I noticed I was one of the lucky few as there were still many people trapped inside shouting. My limbs went numb as I stood there watching the scene unfold before me and there was nothing I could do. There were injured people lying around and I did not know they were dead or alive. Some firefighters were spraying jets of water with the hose, some were administering CPR and some were calming the victims. A crowd of onlookers had gathered too.

Later did I know, it all started with a boy, no more than four years old, playing with matchsticks. Injured people were sent to the hospital and were relieved to see their loved ones. After this incident, I realised that fire is a good servant but a bad master.

Turning back to the news, I was relieved to hear that the bungalow was vacant at that time. The occupants were on a holiday but left a lighted candle at the alter unblown. At least, no lives were lost in this incident.

Jewel Hong

My lungs felt dry. My throat was parched. My eyes were tearing. My face and body were soaked in perspiration and my heart was pounding hard and fast.

“Somebody save me!” I pleaded hysterically. I was trapped in my flat which was engulfed by fire all because of me.

I had been staring anxiously out of my window for what seemed like eternity. Finally, I say someone approaching to where I was. I also saw him whipping out his cell phone from his pocket and dialling a number in. Unfortunately, I did not know what the number was, as I was too far away. Therefore, I shouted again. This time, even louder. He looked up and gave me a thumbs-up. I guess that meant that he had called for help.

The flashback on how the fire started played in my mind again and again... The fire started when I was in the kitchen. I was trying to prepare lunch for me and my mother. I always am amazed by how a single spark could help my mother whip up delicious and scrumptious meals all the time. Therefore, I decided to experiment, but little did I know that a mere overspill of oil onto naked flames could cause a fire.

“EE YO EE YO!” the shrill loud sirens of the fire engine, the police car and the ambulance interrupted me. I was relieved that help had finally arrived. A big crowd of on-lookers had also gathered at the scene. The policeman ushered them to safety.

Amongst the on-lookers, I saw one of my mother’s friends. She was talking very anxiously on the phone. Unfortunately, the man that helped me call for help was nowhere to be seen. The firemen were already spraying jets of water with the hose into my house.

Soon after, I saw my mother bursting through the crowd and calling my name. There were tears in her eyes and there was an incredulous look on her face. I could see from where I was that she was panic-stricken. She was very emotional. She attempted to barge in to save me but she was restrained by some on-lookers. Still, she screamed until her voice was hoarse.

When I looked directly beneath me, I saw a fireman climb up a ladder to bring me down. He shouted some instructions to me and I obeyed them. Very soon, I was down on the ground. The paramedics zoomed my mother and I off to the hospital immediately. On the way there, I told my mother the whole story. She scolded me for ‘playing’ with fire but I could see deep down, she was relieved.

At the hospital, the doctors did a check-up on me and confirmed that I was fine. He gave me some pills as an extra precaution. As my mother knew that the house would be a charred mess, she called my aunt and asked if we could stay over tonight. I learned a very important lesson today and that is, fire is a good servant but a bad master.

The sun shining brightly on the cobble slabs caused kenneth to squint. It was the hottest day of the month so far, and everyone was staying indoors to keep cool. Kenneth wished that he could stay indoors too, but he was playing soccer with his friends in the nearby field near his house.

Whilst daydreaming, he did not notice that the soccer ball was flying directly at him. “Kenn……. Bang!” Too late. The ball hit directly at Kenneth’s face.

“Ouch !” Kenneth kept groaning in pain. Consequently, the red patch on his face bore the pattern of the soccer ball. “Guys, I’m exhausted! Why don’t we end the soccer practice here?” Kenneth suggested. He had used up all his energy, and what he longed for was a nice cool bath followed by a cup of ice-cream sundae with extra chocolate topping. By now, Kenneth was drooling at the thought of it. After agreeing to call it a day, all of them went home and walked separate ways.

Kenneth phoned his father and his father picked him up within minutes. Perspiration glistened on his forehead as he entered the car. Even after resting, he was still breathless and tired. His lethargic body slouched contentedly in the middle of his father’s car backseat as Kenneth took in the cool air-conditioning.

Suddenly, when Kenneth’s father turned at the curb of the traffic light, an enormous fire greeted them. That block of flats right before their eyes was on fire! From the safety of his father’s car, Kenneth watched in both awe and terror at the events that unfolded dramatically before him. “Stay here and don’t move!” Kenneth’s father had instructed him minutes earlier, before disappearing into the crowd of curious onlookers that had gathered at the scene. There were many police cars and fire engines.

When Kenneth looked curiously at the house that was burnt, he saw balls of flames being spewed from the windows. To his horror, he saw a petite boy, no more than six years old, yelling and waving his arm frantically in the air. Clouds of dense, black smoke rose into the sky like gigantic balls of ashened cotton wool.
Chaos reigned. Screams were heard everywhere and within minutes, residents were evacuated and the police tried to calm them down. A man was seen desperately trying to wriggle his way through the police cordon but was blocked by the police. A middle aged woman, was forcibly dragged away by three onlookers from her flaming abode, was howling uncontrollably for the safety of her loved ones.

“WHOOOSSHHH………” Huge jets of water suddenly sprayed out powerfully through the sky as two of the firefighters simultaneously took aim with their trunk- like hoses.

“Mum!” The boy screamed raucously. The pungent smell of the smoke besieged him and he struggled to breathe. With little time to spare, the firemen sprang into action, while one of them propped the long ladder against the wall and climbed up on it in a last- ditch attempt to save the little boy. The fireman coaxed the little boy to slowly climb out of the window and into the arms of the fireman.

When the little boy’s feet touched the ground, the onlookers roared and clapped in ecstasy. His hysterical mother rushed towards the little boy with tears of relief welled up in her eyes, she took the boy into her arms in a tight hug and packed him into the ambulance.

Lady Luck must have been smiling on the little boy that day, for he escaped with only minor burns and scratches. The police were still investigating the reason behind the fire. Kenneth and his father hoped that light would be shed on the truth soon.

Newspaper Review 2 : Cancer Was a Spur to Ironman

I was very touched when I read the story of Mr Alan Lim, the 35 year old man on the newspaper article ‘Cancer was a spur to Ironman’.
Mr Alan Lim was diagnosed with cancer in year 2004. He has 3 young daughters who stood by him and with their support and love, he never gave up in life. His fighting spirit for life inspired me the most.

Mr Lim even took up the challenge of swimming 1.9km, cycling 90.1km and running 21km(70.3 miles in total) to push himself beyond his normal limit. He is also one of the contenders for the inaugural Aviva life Challenge Award, a celebration of Singapore’s most inspirational Ironman. He also hopes to inspire other cancer patients that getting cancer isn’t the end of the world and they should not let their sickness hold them back from anything. I strongly agree with Mr Lim that we should be forward-looking and not let any obstacles hold us back from doing anything that we want to pursue.

Newspaper Review 1 - How Do I Love Singapore? Let Me Count the Ways...

I have lived in Singapore for the past eight years. I stay in a HDB flat with my parents and my 13 year-old brother .I have no relatives staying here so I used to get quite lonely during my first one or two years here. But, as time passed, I got to know my neighbours more.

I have shifted house four times yet I do not get lonely often as my neighbours can always keep me company. Many of my Singaporean friends have made me feel very fortunate to be living in Singapore. These are just some of the reasons why I wish I could stay here for more years to come:

• During my stay in my last house I moved out of, every Friday would be me and my neighbours’ ‘get together night’. Each family would at least one dish of food and we would meet each other at the void deck area. We would play badminton too.

• When my family and I would go to the supermarket to shop for groceries the salespersons always have a smile on their face and are very helpful.

• When I first came to Singapore I did not really like any spicy foods, but now I love it, I especially like curry chicken, YUM!

• My current neighbours are very friendly .Every time they see my family or even me they will greet my with a smiling face .That family is a Malay family so they even invited us to their house to celebrate Hari Raya; • A woman once helped my mother find her way to KK Hospital as my mother applied for a job there and it was her first time going there.

• My mother’s colleagues were very kind and patient with her when she was still new.

• Now more places in Singapore are smoke free not like in other countries, people smoke almost everywhere.

• When I first started primary school I was nervous and scared, thinking other people would treat me differently as I was not from Singapore. But, instead I became good friends with most of the girls in my class in just two to three days. Until now, I still have a very good friendship with all of them.

Singapore is a country that will stand as one united people regardless of race, language or religion. I could list all the reasons why I love Singapore, but I am sure that I will still have many more reasons the next day yet they all cannot describe how much I LOVE SINGAPORE!!!

Newspaper Review 1

How do I love S’pore?
Let me count the ways …….

As a Singaporean, I would like to share
some of my perspectives here:

I simply love the wide variety of food in
Singapore as there are different races of
people here. Example: Chinese, Malay, Indian
and Tamil etc. I especially love the Hainanese
Chicken Rice and the Roti Prata. They are
fabulous !

The weather in Singapore is lovely too. It is
sunny throughout the year, with occasional rain
unlike certain countries that have hurricanes
and storms etc.

Singapore is very peaceful and safe. Our crime
rates are pretty low compared to other countries.

I am proud that Changi International Airport is
one of the best and top in the world. It is well-
equipped with facilities such as eateries, shops and
restaurants.The services there are great
too. Whenever I go for a vacation, I like flying
with Singapore Airlines as the flight attendants are
friendly and they provide the best service.

Composition 1 Samples

It was another normal school day for me. I walked home slowly thinking about the amount of homework my teacher flooded me with. It suddenly dawned upon me that it was a Friday and my mother was going to take me out. All of a sudden, the world seemed to be brighter, and I skipped home excitedly and wondered where my mother was going to take me.

At my house, I saw a shiny black BMW and an old and rusty truck. I furrowed my eyebrows, as I curiously peered into the car. “Who could have come at this hour? And why did that person bring a truck along?” I wondered out loud. “Maybe another long-lost friend,” I thought. Looking at the front door, I gasped in horror. The door was left ajar! My mother is a very meticulous person and it was not possible for her to forget to close it. Sensing something amiss, I stepped into my house.

When I went in my house, my eyes widened and my jaw dropped. I just stared in mute horror. The house was in utter chaos. The pillows were thrown on the floor, magazines were thrown and lay messily on the ground. My blood ran cold. Wild thoughts entered my mind, daylight burglary, a lunatic running into the house and messing it up, a ghost on the loose….The harder I tried to keep my mind from these wild thoughts, the faster my mind raced.

Suspecting it was daylight burglary, I whipped out my “Samsung” handphone and dialed for help. After putting down the phone, I found that my stomach was growling. I walked carefully to the kitchen and look for a snack. Suddenly, I saw a long shadow dance on the far side of the wall. A tingling sensation ran down my spine. I heard mumbling coming from the kitchen. I looked up and peered from the side. The sight that I saw made me stand rooted to the ground. I rubbed my eyes and looked again. My eyes were not playing tricks on me and my mother was tied to the chair! Beside her was a masked man. I covered my mouth, stopping a horrified scream. “What could I do?” I thought. The police will be arriving but eh burglar would find me. True enough, I felt a cold hard metal under my neck. “Work with me and I will do you no harm,” the burglar demanded in a cold and hard voice.

My legs turned jelly-like. Just as I thought my fate was sealed, like a housefly caught in a spider’s web, with no way out, I heard the unmistakable wail of the police siren. The burglar was caught by surprise. He swiftly released me, grabbed his loot and dashed out of the house. Fortunately, I could hear the policeman shout, “You are surrounded, do not try to escape!” The policemen took him away.

I went back and released my poor, panic-stricken mother. Just as promised, she got changed and brought me out for a later lunch. It was such an ordeal and I was glad it was finally over. This horrific incident would never leave my mind and I hope to never experience it again.

The gruelling heat stung my skin, as I walked home from school. I took a right-turn into the narrow passageway that was a short-cut to my house.

The passageway was dim, and looked creepy, with rubbish sprawled all over the floor. There was a gentle breeze blowing, which sent a shiver through my spine. Finally, I reached my house. However, I noticed that the front door was left ajar. “There is something amiss,” I thought. Then I opened the door wider to walk into the house.

The moment I stepped in, I was stunned to see that the cushions were thrown all over the floor, and the newspapers that were piled neatly on the table this morning had been sprawled on the floor.

My blood ran cold, and my heart pounded at an amazing speed. “Maybe there is a burglar, or a ghost…’ the harder I tried to keep my mind from wild thoughts, the faster my mind raced.

Suddenly, “Ring! Ring! Ring!” I jumped. The telephone was ringing. I tiptoed over to the phone, and answered it. “Hello, who is this? “ I asked. There was an awkward silence, before the person on the other end said, “I have been expecting you …” Then `click!’ the person had hung up.

After gently putting down the phone, I decided to investigate the kitchen first. I walked gingerly into the kitchen, but there was nothing there.

All of a sudden, an icy cold hand landed on my shoulder. I froze. The person behind me said, “Surrender all your possessions and I shall leave you unharmed.”

“I will give you everything, so long as I’m safe,” I said.

Just then, I heard someone giggle behind me. I immediately turned around and saw all my friends and relatives. My eyes widened and my jaw dropped. I stared in amazement.

“Happy Birthday!” they shouted. That was when I realized that the earlier happenings were all planned out by them. I smiled.

After which, we tidied up the house, and we held a big party. We played games, and had great fun.

This was by far the best birthday ever!

**********

I ambled slowly and lazily home from school. After a long day at school,
followed by the huge amount of homework which added to the weight of my
bag, I was so worn out that I was ready to drop. The sound of stray cats mewing and the noisy sound of the metal rubbish bins as they walked over it awoke me as I sauntered through the silent, dark, creepy path which was so narrow. Well, this was my daily routine.

As I approached my house, I noticed that the door was left ajar! I suspected that something was amiss as my mother had never left the door open before. When I entered the house, I felt the last ounce of my energy draining out of me. I was appalled to see the house in such a chaotic manner. The chairs and tables were on their sides, the drawers and cupboards were left open and were empty. Beads of sweat rolled down my worried face as I thought of the possibilities that could have happened. Where were my parents? What happened to them? Were they robbed? Theses thoughts raced through my mind repeatedly, making me dizzy and confused.

I heard shuffling noises coming from my parents’ room. I knew that only one thing could have happened – we have been robbed…..

I crept quietly to the kitchen to call the police. As I dialled, the number, I was overcome with feelings of fear and kept turning back to look out for the burglar. As I turned to get out of the house, a man with a mask said,” Happy Birthday, Jane! I almost jumped out of my skin when I saw the masked man, but later realized that he was my father! I was so stressed with my work, I totally forgot it was my birthday!

The magnificent sun spread its powerful rays all over the earth. Trees swayed to and fro in the light breeze while the birds chirped merrily. The magnificent sun seemed hot and merciless to me. It shone
brightly across the blue and cloudless sky. Sweat was dripping down my neck.

I was sauntering along a dark alley on my way home. The long
hours at school had utterly drained me, mentally and physically. The first thing I wanted to do when I reached home was to luxuriate in a hot bath. Then, I would treat myself to a big slice of creamy chocolate cheese cake from the freezer. Yummy! I began to drool at the thought of it.

Suddenly, my reverie was rudely interrupted by the sudden gust of wind. Violent squalls signalled the approached of an imminent rain. Out of the blue, a small piece of paper flew straight into my face. I gently took it off my face and read it. It was about a wanted criminal on loose. I studied the face carefully. The criminal had a long lean face, a shock of unruly hair and busy eyebrows. He also had a long and thin scar on his cheek. Staring at his face made me scared. I quickly ran to the nearby dustbin to throw away the paper. A lingering feeling of creepiness came over me.

Soon, a familiar sight of my neighbourhood enfolded before my eyes. However, as I neared my house, I felt that something was amiss. The front door was ajar. My mother always locked the door. Footprints on the ground showed that someone had recently gone through the gate and to the front door. Luckily, there was a stick on the ground. After picking up the stick, I walked stealthily towards the front door and gave it a hard kick. The door opened with a thump and the force was so great that the door bounced close and I had to stop it with my foot.

Once inside my house, I narrowed my eyes to adjust to the sudden darkness in the house, at the corner of my eye, I noticed a tall figure advancing towards me. “Time for some martial arts!” I thought. I quickly turned around, clenched my fist and punched with all my might.

“Ouch! Why did you do that for?” the burglar asked. It was then I realised it was my brother. The familiar face in front of me was not a smily face that I usually saw but a face which showed the expression of groaning in pain. I immediately bent down to help my brother up. By then, the pain was not as excruciating as before.

Out of sudden, out came three laughing figures. I recognized them, John, Tom and Benjamin. “You’ve got tricked! Ha! Ha! Ha!” They laughed. At that moment, I was too furious to even say anything. I stormed to my room and locked the door. After I cooled down, I decided to go out to see what were they doing. I confronted them and chided them for playing such a prank.

“Sis, don’t you remember today is April Fool’s Day?” My brother asked me. The thought of April Fool’s day dawned on me. My brother and his friends have planned to surprise me by playing a prank. A smile slowly crept on my face. I forgave them but told them never to do it again.

Lenten Reflection - For the Christians Among Us

I was on my way home last week after dinner at Parkway when I saw this beautiful rainbow and was compelled to capture a couple of shots of it.

Remember God's Rainbow Covenant in Genesis?

And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

The sign of the rainbow calls us to repentance and hope. It reminds us that when the waters receded from the face of the earth, the earth was covered with promises of God’s merciful intentions toward a good creation. Lent offers us a time to remember those promises and to repent our failure to live up to them.

ALL THE BEST FOR YOUR CT1

Hi all,

I will keep all of you in my prayers as you work hard through the week for your CT1. All the best to everybody!

The increase in demand for tuna is due to a sushi boom in the region. Why do you think eating sushi has become major cities?

Most importantly, no oil is needed in sushi, so sushi is a very healthy food. (Reported by Elizabeth)

Eating sushi is convenient and it is healthy. Sushi’s main ingredients are rice, vinegar, raw fish or shellfish or vegetables rolled up in nori seaweed - the most popular fishes are tuna and salmon. Sushi is low in calories while also high in fibre, vitamins and omega-3.The nori is dried toasted seaweed. It is fat-free and contains vitamins A and B. The rice is relatively healthy and it is also high in fibre and often enriched with vitamins and minerals. There is a large variety of fillings in sushi and one of the most popular fillings is Tuna.
Tuna is rich in vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids. This probably accounts for the increase in demand for Tuna, and why eating sushi has become major in Asian countries! (Reported by Yan Lin)
