Composition 1 Samples

It was another normal school day for me. I walked home slowly thinking about the amount of homework my teacher flooded me with. It suddenly dawned upon me that it was a Friday and my mother was going to take me out. All of a sudden, the world seemed to be brighter, and I skipped home excitedly and wondered where my mother was going to take me.

At my house, I saw a shiny black BMW and an old and rusty truck. I furrowed my eyebrows, as I curiously peered into the car. “Who could have come at this hour? And why did that person bring a truck along?” I wondered out loud. “Maybe another long-lost friend,” I thought. Looking at the front door, I gasped in horror. The door was left ajar! My mother is a very meticulous person and it was not possible for her to forget to close it. Sensing something amiss, I stepped into my house.

When I went in my house, my eyes widened and my jaw dropped. I just stared in mute horror. The house was in utter chaos. The pillows were thrown on the floor, magazines were thrown and lay messily on the ground. My blood ran cold. Wild thoughts entered my mind, daylight burglary, a lunatic running into the house and messing it up, a ghost on the loose….The harder I tried to keep my mind from these wild thoughts, the faster my mind raced.

Suspecting it was daylight burglary, I whipped out my “Samsung” handphone and dialed for help. After putting down the phone, I found that my stomach was growling. I walked carefully to the kitchen and look for a snack. Suddenly, I saw a long shadow dance on the far side of the wall. A tingling sensation ran down my spine. I heard mumbling coming from the kitchen. I looked up and peered from the side. The sight that I saw made me stand rooted to the ground. I rubbed my eyes and looked again. My eyes were not playing tricks on me and my mother was tied to the chair! Beside her was a masked man. I covered my mouth, stopping a horrified scream. “What could I do?” I thought. The police will be arriving but eh burglar would find me. True enough, I felt a cold hard metal under my neck. “Work with me and I will do you no harm,” the burglar demanded in a cold and hard voice.

My legs turned jelly-like. Just as I thought my fate was sealed, like a housefly caught in a spider’s web, with no way out, I heard the unmistakable wail of the police siren. The burglar was caught by surprise. He swiftly released me, grabbed his loot and dashed out of the house. Fortunately, I could hear the policeman shout, “You are surrounded, do not try to escape!” The policemen took him away.

I went back and released my poor, panic-stricken mother. Just as promised, she got changed and brought me out for a later lunch. It was such an ordeal and I was glad it was finally over. This horrific incident would never leave my mind and I hope to never experience it again.

The gruelling heat stung my skin, as I walked home from school. I took a right-turn into the narrow passageway that was a short-cut to my house.

The passageway was dim, and looked creepy, with rubbish sprawled all over the floor. There was a gentle breeze blowing, which sent a shiver through my spine. Finally, I reached my house. However, I noticed that the front door was left ajar. “There is something amiss,” I thought. Then I opened the door wider to walk into the house.

The moment I stepped in, I was stunned to see that the cushions were thrown all over the floor, and the newspapers that were piled neatly on the table this morning had been sprawled on the floor.

My blood ran cold, and my heart pounded at an amazing speed. “Maybe there is a burglar, or a ghost…’ the harder I tried to keep my mind from wild thoughts, the faster my mind raced.

Suddenly, “Ring! Ring! Ring!” I jumped. The telephone was ringing. I tiptoed over to the phone, and answered it. “Hello, who is this? “ I asked. There was an awkward silence, before the person on the other end said, “I have been expecting you …” Then `click!’ the person had hung up.

After gently putting down the phone, I decided to investigate the kitchen first. I walked gingerly into the kitchen, but there was nothing there.

All of a sudden, an icy cold hand landed on my shoulder. I froze. The person behind me said, “Surrender all your possessions and I shall leave you unharmed.”

“I will give you everything, so long as I’m safe,” I said.

Just then, I heard someone giggle behind me. I immediately turned around and saw all my friends and relatives. My eyes widened and my jaw dropped. I stared in amazement.

“Happy Birthday!” they shouted. That was when I realized that the earlier happenings were all planned out by them. I smiled.

After which, we tidied up the house, and we held a big party. We played games, and had great fun.

This was by far the best birthday ever!

I ambled slowly and lazily home from school. After a long day at school,
followed by the huge amount of homework which added to the weight of my
bag, I was so worn out that I was ready to drop. The sound of stray cats mewing and the noisy sound of the metal rubbish bins as they walked over it awoke me as I sauntered through the silent, dark, creepy path which was so narrow. Well, this was my daily routine.

As I approached my house, I noticed that the door was left ajar! I suspected that something was amiss as my mother had never left the door open before. When I entered the house, I felt the last ounce of my energy draining out of me. I was appalled to see the house in such a chaotic manner. The chairs and tables were on their sides, the drawers and cupboards were left open and were empty. Beads of sweat rolled down my worried face as I thought of the possibilities that could have happened. Where were my parents? What happened to them? Were they robbed? Theses thoughts raced through my mind repeatedly, making me dizzy and confused.

I heard shuffling noises coming from my parents’ room. I knew that only one thing could have happened – we have been robbed…..

I crept quietly to the kitchen to call the police. As I dialled, the number, I was overcome with feelings of fear and kept turning back to look out for the burglar. As I turned to get out of the house, a man with a mask said,” Happy Birthday, Jane! I almost jumped out of my skin when I saw the masked man, but later realized that he was my father! I was so stressed with my work, I totally forgot it was my birthday!

The magnificent sun spread its powerful rays all over the earth. Trees swayed to and fro in the light breeze while the birds chirped merrily. The magnificent sun seemed hot and merciless to me. It shone
brightly across the blue and cloudless sky. Sweat was dripping down my neck.

I was sauntering along a dark alley on my way home. The long
hours at school had utterly drained me, mentally and physically. The first thing I wanted to do when I reached home was to luxuriate in a hot bath. Then, I would treat myself to a big slice of creamy chocolate cheese cake from the freezer. Yummy! I began to drool at the thought of it.

Suddenly, my reverie was rudely interrupted by the sudden gust of wind. Violent squalls signalled the approached of an imminent rain. Out of the blue, a small piece of paper flew straight into my face. I gently took it off my face and read it. It was about a wanted criminal on loose. I studied the face carefully. The criminal had a long lean face, a shock of unruly hair and busy eyebrows. He also had a long and thin scar on his cheek. Staring at his face made me scared. I quickly ran to the nearby dustbin to throw away the paper. A lingering feeling of creepiness came over me.

Soon, a familiar sight of my neighbourhood enfolded before my eyes. However, as I neared my house, I felt that something was amiss. The front door was ajar. My mother always locked the door. Footprints on the ground showed that someone had recently gone through the gate and to the front door. Luckily, there was a stick on the ground. After picking up the stick, I walked stealthily towards the front door and gave it a hard kick. The door opened with a thump and the force was so great that the door bounced close and I had to stop it with my foot.

Once inside my house, I narrowed my eyes to adjust to the sudden darkness in the house, at the corner of my eye, I noticed a tall figure advancing towards me. “Time for some martial arts!” I thought. I quickly turned around, clenched my fist and punched with all my might.

“Ouch! Why did you do that for?” the burglar asked. It was then I realised it was my brother. The familiar face in front of me was not a smily face that I usually saw but a face which showed the expression of groaning in pain. I immediately bent down to help my brother up. By then, the pain was not as excruciating as before.

Out of sudden, out came three laughing figures. I recognized them, John, Tom and Benjamin. “You’ve got tricked! Ha! Ha! Ha!” They laughed. At that moment, I was too furious to even say anything. I stormed to my room and locked the door. After I cooled down, I decided to go out to see what were they doing. I confronted them and chided them for playing such a prank.

“Sis, don’t you remember today is April Fool’s Day?” My brother asked me. The thought of April Fool’s day dawned on me. My brother and his friends have planned to surprise me by playing a prank. A smile slowly crept on my face. I forgave them but told them never to do it again.
